Wildlife Pictures From Africa

The wildlife pictures and other resources on this site are for enjoyment. Please browse around and share some of the sights I've been lucky enough to experience. While the bulk of the pictures are grouped in Galleries, the latest additions (previews below) can be seen on my Blog.

Although I try to pay for the upkeep of this site by selling wildlife stock photos on "Virtual CD" or as Photo Packs, a collection of wildlife and nature photos is also available at no cost for personal or commercial use. Please note however that Terms of Use still apply to all other images.

The Struggle for Survival
For wild animals, each day is a struggle to survive, so every sense must remain on high alert.

This edgy, taut-nerved vigilance shows clearly in the eyes and posture of both predators and prey, as in the photos above and elsewhere on this site.

But as the numbers of wild animals dwindle, so too are the opportunities to see them in their natural state.

This realisation has led to a surge in safari tourism, much of it to the nature reserves and national parks of Southern and East Africa. Those fortunate enough to visit these areas often want a record of their safari, hence the growing interest in wildlife photography.

Wildlife Pictures Often Disappoint
But for the average tourist, picture opportunities are limited by numerous constraints - time, weather, equipment, access restrictions - so the wildlife pictures taken on safari are often disappointing and not a true reflection of the experience.

As a regular tourist and not a professional wildlife photographer, I have experienced these frustrations.

My ambitions for this website are modest - all I hope is that the pictures provide some pleasure and that I am able to share a modicum of what I've learnt about wildlife and wildlife photography.

More Wildlife Pictures Constantly Added
I try to add fresh pictures on a regular basis. Here's what's available now:

  • Elephant Pictures - big bull elephants, matriarchs, youngsters and herds.
  • Lion Pictures - regal males, sleek lionesses, sub-adults, playful cubs.
  • Antelope Pictures - graceful impala, stately kudu, waterbuck, nyala and steenbuck.

  • Buffalo Pictures - striking photos taken in Botswana, Zambia and South Africa.
  • Baboon Pictures - new pictures added of these fascinating and often amusing primates
  • Monkey Pictures - vervet monkeys, our cute primate cousins, at work and play
  • Hyena Pictures - the spotted hyena, on the prowl, portraits, hyena pups

  • Close-Up pictures - some of Africa's better-known wildlife species from close range
  • Bird Pictures - from Eagles to Bee-eaters, the big, the small, the colorful
  • Leopard Pictures - secretive, solitary, immensely strong - the leopard is the ultimate cat
  • Hippo pictures - fascinating pics of hippopotamus on land and in the water
  • Cheetah pictures - sleekly streamlined, the cheetah is the fastest land mammal on earth
  • Mongoose pictures - these small carnivores have a sophisticated and caring social structure
