A Beginner's Tutorial: Installing a Brush into Adobe Photoshop By Cristina Blomberg There is a wonderful selection of brushes in each Photoshop program that Adobe has installed as standard. Digital scrappers, however, want and can always use more! A search on a web browser for "free Photoshop brushes" will give many results for free downloadable brushes. After selecting and downloading the brushes, they must be installed before use in Photoshop. This tutorial will show how and where to install these brushes. Though all versions of Photoshop are slightly different, the installing procedure is similar.
There is a wonderful selection of brushes in each Photoshop program that Adobe has installed as standard. 1. If necessary, unzip the folder containing the brushes. The file extension ".abr" signifies a Photoshop brush. The icon is shown below.
 2. Open your Adobe files, found in your System (C) drive…Program Files…Adobe… (and then click on the folder with the name of your version of Photoshop). 3. Once in the main folder of the program, the Brushes folder will be found inside the Presets folder.
 4. With the Brushes folder open, simply copy and paste or drag the new brush file into the folder. Close the Adobe folders. (You may need to restart your computer before the new brushes appear in Photoshop.) 5. After re-opening Photoshop, the new brush may need to be loaded. Be sure your Brush Tool is selected.
 6. On the Brushes palette tab, click on the small circular arrow to view the Brushes drop-down menu.
 7. Choose "Load Brushes…" from the menu and when prompted, open the Brushes folder and new brush file. Once the new .abr brush file is loaded, it will appear in the drop-down list for future use. Have fun playing with your new brushes! |
